Every DTF transfer is four things: ink, film, powder, and the machine that puts them together. Cheap out on any one and you get a print that looks fine on day one and fails on day thirty. Here’s what to look for — from whoever you buy from.

The ink

Water-based pigment ink is the standard. What separates good from bad is pigment load and quality control. Under-pigmented ink gives you washed-out color and a weak white underbase, which is why some transfers look grey on a black shirt.

What to ask a supplier: Is your ink OEKO-TEX certified? Is it ethylene glycol free? Who manufactures it?

We print with OEKO-TEX certified, ethylene-glycol-free water-based ink made under ISO 9001 and 14001 certified processes.

The powder

This is the adhesive, and it’s the single biggest factor in whether a print cracks.

100% TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is elastic — it stretches and recovers with the garment. Blended or PES-heavy powders are cheaper and more rigid. They hold fine on a stiff canvas tote and fail on a stretchy performance tee.

Grain size matters too. Too coarse and the powder pools at edges, leaving a crusty raised border and poor bonding under thin lines. Too fine and it can scorch during cure.

What to ask: Is it 100% TPU or a blend? What grain?

We use 100% TPU, medium-fine.

The film

The film has to release cleanly and completely at the peel temperature it claims. A film sold as “hot peel” that actually needs a few seconds of cooling will pull ink off your garment when you peel it on schedule.

What to ask: Is it a true hot peel? Does it also tolerate a cold peel, or are you locked into one method?

Ours is a true hot peel that takes a cold peel just as well.

The curing

Adhesive that isn’t fully melted into the ink won’t bond. Adhesive that’s overcooked goes brittle. Both failures look identical coming out of the box — you find out at the press, or worse, your customer finds out at the laundry.

This is why commercial shakers with in-line dryers matter. Hand-shaking and oven-curing a sheet gives you inconsistent results across a 24-inch width.

The printheads

Epson i3200 and i1600 heads are the commercial DTF standard. They’re what let a shop hold fine detail and consistent registration across a full-width sheet. Consumer conversions — a desktop Epson hacked into a DTF printer — can produce a nice print, but not reliably, at volume, across a big sheet.

The short version

When you’re comparing gang sheet suppliers, price per square inch is the easiest thing to compare and the least informative. Ask what’s in the transfer. If they can’t tell you, that’s your answer.
